ADHD and Overdue Tax Returns: How I Can Help
For many people with ADHD, tax isn't just boring or confusing — it can feel completely overwhelming. I know this first-hand, because I have ADHD myself. And while it gives me strengths in some areas, it also brings challenges — especially when it comes to hyperfocus.
A simple email can take me 15 minutes to write. A tax return? I can't just fill in the boxes — I need to understand exactly what each one means and why it's there. But I've learned that for many people, that level of detail isn't the problem. The problem is getting started at all.
Why ADHD and tax don't mix
If you have ADHD (or even if you don't), you might have been hit with penalties simply because life got too much. ADHD affects time management, memory, and motivation — and tax deadlines don't make allowances for that. Before you know it, the penalties start to mount, and the fear of facing it grows even bigger.
But that cycle can be broken — one return at a time.
What I do differently
At Regeneris Partners, I offer a step-by-step process tailored for people who feel overwhelmed by tax — especially those with ADHD or similar challenges.
Step 1: I register as your HMRC agent
I deal with HMRC on your behalf. That's one less thing on your plate straight away.
Step 2: I get the missing returns submitted
We'll agree the easiest way for you to get the information to me. Some people prefer a phone call where we go through everything live. Others like to pull together what they can in their own time using a clear list I'll provide — and then we fill in the gaps together.
Step 3: You find out what's owed
Once the returns are done, you'll know exactly where you stand. The final figure includes tax, interest, and penalties. While the tax and interest can't be changed, the penalties can be appealed.
Step 4: I appeal your penalties
If ADHD has affected your ability to file on time, I'll make that case to HMRC for you. ADHD is officially recognised as a disability, and if it has been the cause of the late filing, then it can be used as a reasonable excuse.
Step 5: If needed, I negotiate time to pay
If you are unable or choose not to pay the balance in full, I'll prepare the budget HMRC requires and negotiate a payment plan on your behalf.
And I do all of this in the way that only someone else with ADHD truly can — by understanding how you got here, working alongside you (not judging), and offering practical, tailored solutions that get things sorted and keep them on track.
Keeping you on top of things going forward
Once we've got the backlog cleared, I'll make sure the same situation doesn't happen again. I will file your annual return each year — and yes, I'll be chasing you for the information if needed. I know that you don't deserve to be penalised for having ADHD. What you need is someone who understands and gets it done.
How much it costs
I'm fully transparent on pricing:
- £450 per missing return
- £750 for Time to Pay arrangements, including disposable income forecasts and negotiation
- Penalty appeals are charged on a success-only basis: 20% (+VAT) of penalties cancelled. If there's no refund, there's no charge for the appeal.
- More complex work involving multiple years and taxes will be priced on a case by case basis.
A recent client review
“It was such a relief to come across someone who truly understands the challenges I faced with ADHD and the position it put me in with my tax. I had put off submitting my self-assessment for two years running and had racked up £000's in penalties. The bigger the problem got, the harder it was to deal with and the more stress it put on me and my family.
Adrian from Regeneris Partners took all that stress away, sorted out my overdue tax returns and successfully appealed the penalties for me. He is very understanding, consultative, patient and knowledgeable. I would recommend him highly to any person or business struggling with tax issues. His services are worth every penny.”
